Starting Solid Food!

We started Xavier on rice cereal the day after we got back from San Diego, so we have made it through 4 days now! It was fun to watch his reaction the first time. He started off trying to grab the spoon, resulting in me having to hold down his hands. We figured out the last couple of days that if we put the tray over his arms, he doesn't really struggle to get them out much. He certainly made some interesting faces the first time, but I think he likes it now. We've only tried rice cereal and oatmeal, but he liked the oatmeal better. Now he thinks he needs to help us out with feeding him and he will forcefully throw his head forward onto the spoon...I see why they cover them in rubber! I think I'm going to try to make our own baby food as we move on to vegetables and fruits, so I was checking out these websites today:

San Diego!

We had a great trip to San Diego and it's taken me a while to get through the hundreds of pictures from the few days we were there! So I'm finally posting now.

Our little boy was great on both of the flights (much to our surprise!) He slept through most of them and when he was awake, his mommy and daddy let him watch the Directv that they have on Frontier flights. He doesn't get to watch TV normally, so he was excited :) The worst part of the flight was that our carseat was lost! They really could have lost any other piece of our luggage and we could have survived for a day or two, but we couldn't even leave the airport without the seat. They eventually loaned us a fairly crappy substitute, but we didn't get to bed until well after 2 am with this delay in the airport!

I spent most of the Easter Sunday service sitting outside on a bench with my little talkative boy (cryroom and narthex were already packed with other kiddos), but Matt and his mom enjoyed it! Easter was a great time for us because Xavier got to meet his great grandparents for the first time! We spent a couple of days there with them and they were the epitome of doting grandparents! I'm surprised they have any hair left with all of the hair pulling they let Xavier do :)

We had fun taking Xavier around--to the park with his great-grandparents, to the Coronado beach, and to the Scripps Aquarium with Grandma. Thanks for a wonderful trip!
Notice the lipstick on his forehead :)

I love his hair blowing in the wind!

Fun times with Family

We were so happy and blessed that my parents and Erica decided to spend their spring break visiting us! Thanks for putting up with a crowded house, a stressed out daughter, and even running errands and cleaning for us! Somehow I think a little boy named Xavier might have had a little to do with that. (Note: my parents go on "vacation" and do things like vacuum my whole house, change the oil in my car, etc. I'm not complaining! Matt always jokes about how they never sit still...)
Xavier loved all the attention he received! Actually he's been slightly crabby since they left, maybe because he's not getting quite as much?
Aunt Erica was so good at entertaining and playing with her nephew!! They had lots of fun together. Xavier would scoot across an entire room to get to Erica and her electronic Uno game! Grandpa bought Xavier his first basketball! Another thing to chew on... But we'll start working on fundamentals soon :)
In other news, I resigned from coaching track on Wednesday (long story that I'm not going to write about on here). I will miss the kids SO much, but it was the right thing to do. I think I will enjoy the extra time with Xavier.

We are heading to CA today! Pray that my baby boy likes to fly or that our flight isn't too crowded! We are taking a really late flight so we could be in San Diego for Easter. I won't be updating my photo-a-day blog while we are there but I promise I will take pictures and post when I return!

Teething?

My little boy didn't sleep much last night. Guess who else didn't sleep much?!?! He must have been up 10-12 times and was screaming. My best bet is that he might be teething, but I don't see any teeth immediately breaking through, so I really don't know! He did enjoy chomping on a teething ring though.
In other news, my parents are coming for their spring break!!! They will be driving here tomorrow. I'm really excited for them to see Xavier--he's changed so much since Christmas. I think for me it will almost seem like I get two weeks of spring break, because first they will be here and they we will head out to San Diego for our break!

Worm Crawl

Xavier is finding new ways to get around! The main reason that he feels the need to move about the room is to migrate towards the kitties. Too bad they don't share that same affection for him!

Month five

Dear Xavier,

Why does five months sound so much older than four months? Every day I’m so excited to see the new things that you are learning and doing, but also a little sad to see my baby disappearing before my eyes.

Perhaps the biggest excitement of the month for you was the acquisition of some new toys…an exersaucer and a doorway jumper. You could jump and jump and jump for hours if we let you! Some days you jump in the hallway at the high school while Mommy and Daddy go to track practice and you garner quite the audience. You still love to show off for all the high school students that we teach and coach. Those kids love to play with you after hearing all the stories that we tell about you in class. And Daddy likes to imitate your faces and expressions for his classes…I think this might scare them a little…somehow it’s not quite as cute on a 32 year old…

You love to GRAB things. And what is closer to grab and pull than the face of the person who is holding you? Our cheeks, our noses, my hair are all fair game. But even more fun than that is grabbing the cats’ fur!! The presence of the kitties brightens your whole world as you smile and laugh and coo at them. But I’m not sure we can say the same for cats. Mommy is working on teaching you how to pet them softly…and not end up with a fistful of fur! Little do the cats know that in a few more months they won’t be so easily able to run away from you. I’m hoping that someday they like you as much as you like them!

You are completely comfortable rolling over and being on your tummy now. So I’ve been working with you on some new skills like sitting up. The first time we tried to show Daddy, you slammed your head into the mirror…I don’t think Daddy was too happy with me after that. When you balance on your hands, you are able to sit up, but most of the time you lunge after a colorful toy in front of you instead…and then continue to pursue the toy with a type of movement that looks more like swimming than an attempt to crawl.

My absolute favorite sound in the world is the sound of your laughter! Such random things can make you laugh—even the sound of paper tearing. I’m on a daily quest to find new ways to make you laugh just so I can hear that sound. I hope that as you grow up, you will continue to see the joy in the simple parts of life!

Love,
Mommy

First Trip to the Park!

Today was Xavier's first trip to the park! We walked to a park in the neighborhood hoping to find baby swings...but no luck. We at least took advantage of the slide (with Daddy and Mommy's help) and Xavier enjoyed feeling the wind blowing through his hair! Here's Xavier and his daddy at the bottom of the tunnel slide.
In other news, I cooked Indian again!! Sweet and sour balti chicken, curried cauliflower, pullao rice, and garlic naan. It only took me 1 1/2 hours this time. I perhaps made it a little hot with the Indian green chilies since Matt had to take a 1/2 hour break in the middle of eating it and eat a yogurt instead to cool his mouth (it didn't bother me, but I have taste buds of steel). Matt cleaned up the kitchen...two loads in the dishwasher!
